Why Nadeau Gets the Call, Not Unger Sorum
Seth Jarvis had surgery in June to repair the torn labrum and rotator cuff he's been playing through since 2023-24. Tulsky said four to six months. Best case that's late October. Worst case it's January.
That's the leading goal scorer on a Stanley Cup team, and he plays on Aho's wing.
Somebody has to fill that hole to start the year, and if you look at the two obvious prospects in Chicago, most of the conversation I've seen talk about Felix Unger Sorum. He led the Wolves in scoring. He already got the call-up in April. He's the smoother, more polished player.
I think it's going to be Bradly Nadeau, and I think it's not close.
What they each did last season
Nadeau: 27 goals and 29 assists in 52 games. Team-leading goal total. AHL All-Star. He was on pace for 35 before injuries and NHL recalls cut into the year. Then 17 points in 21 playoff games on the run to the Calder Cup Final.
Unger Sorum: 63 points in 69 games — 16 goals and 47 assists. Led the Wolves in points and assists.
On paper Unger Sorum had the better season. Sixty-three points beats 56. He's the one with the scoring title.
But look at the shape of those two lines.
The shape is the whole argument
Sixteen goals and 47 assists is a distributor. That's not a knock — the scouting on him has always been that he's a crafty small-area passer who manipulates defenders and finds seams, and he had 37 assists the year before too. It's a real skill and it's why he was worth a second-round pick.
Twenty-seven goals in 52 games is a shooter. Nadeau was the fifth player in AHL history to score 30 before turning 20. He did it again the next year at a better rate.
Now go back to what Carolina is actually missing. Jarvis put up 32 goals in 71 games. He was the team's leading goal scorer. Carolina's problem in October isn't a shortage of guys who can move the puck — they've got Aho, they've got Stankoven, they've got Blake. The problem is thirty-two goals walking out the door.
You don't replace a goal scorer with a playmaker. You replace him with the guy in your system who scores goals.
The defensive question, which is the real one
Here's where I think most of the analysis goes wrong.
Everybody knows Brind'Amour won't play a guy he doesn't trust in his own end. Ask Jake Bean. That's been the filter on every Carolina prospect for eight years, and Nadeau failed it badly at first — he was minus-20 in his rookie AHL season, which is exactly the red flag that keeps a scorer in the minors.
Then last season happened.
There's a FloHockey piece from May about Nadeau's play in the Central Division Finals against Grand Rapids. Wolves up 2-0 with four minutes left in a series-clinching game, and Spiros Anastas has the 21-year-old on the ice. Nadeau goes deep into his own zone, digs a loose puck out from between two Grand Rapids forecheckers, and makes an exit pass on his off wing to spring a 2-on-1 the other way.
That's not a highlight. That's the specific thing Brind'Amour has to see before a young winger gets minutes.
He also had his best round of the playoffs in the conference final — the round where Unger Sorum went down injured in Game 2 and didn't come back.
The other stuff that matters
NHL games. Nadeau played 12 games with Carolina last season and scored three goals in about 13 minutes a night. He debuted back in the 2023-24 finale. Unger Sorum's NHL experience is essentially one game, the 2025-26 regular season finale, after being recalled in April.
Twelve games isn't a lot, but it means the coaching staff has already watched him at this level and made a decision about what he can handle. That matters more in a defending champion's lineup than a slightly better AHL point total.
Age and clock. Nadeau turned 21 in May and is in the last year of the three-year entry-level deal he signed in April 2024. Unger Sorum turns 21 in September. Nadeau's contract situation creates actual pressure to find out what he is. Unger Sorum has more runway.
Position. Jarvis plays wing on Aho's line. Nadeau is a left wing who shoots right, which is the profile you want on that side. Unger Sorum has bounced between center and wing.
Health. Unger Sorum got hurt in Game 2 of the conference final and missed the rest of the run, including the entire Calder Cup Final. Nadeau played all 21 playoff games. Durability is a tiebreaker when you're picking someone to fill in for eight weeks.
Where I could be wrong
Two things.
First, Rod might not call up anybody. Tulsky said in June that they're looking at everything and that the roster could look different by November. If they add a veteran winger on a cheap deal, or if Jackson Blake just slides up to Aho's wing and the fourth line gets internal promotion, neither of these guys gets the look.
Second, Unger Sorum's leap is real and I don't want to undersell it. He went from 21 points in 60 games to 63 in 69. That's not a plateau, that's a trajectory. He had ten points in seven World Junior games. If he's added a shot to the passing, the argument changes.
But I don't think that's what happens in October. Carolina needs goals for six to twelve weeks while their leading scorer's shoulder heals. They have a guy in Chicago who has scored 30-plus in back-to-back AHL seasons before his 21st birthday, who has already played a dozen NHL games, and who spent last spring proving he can be trusted in the last four minutes of a close playoff game.
That's the call.
Unger Sorum gets his shot too, probably in the second half. But the first guy up is Nadeau.
