# Nadeau Isn’t a Fill-In. Don’t Treat Him Like One.

Carolina recalled Bradly Nadeau from Chicago on Wednesday, and the easy way to read that is as a placeholder. Hall’s out, Staal’s out, somebody has to play. Nadeau’s the somebody.

That’s the wrong read. Nadeau is a first-round pick who went back to the AHL at final cuts with nothing left to prove there. He had a strong camp and still got sent down because the roster was full. That’s not a knock on him. That’s what happens when a team is deep enough to win a Cup. Now there’s a spot, and the question isn’t whether he can hold it for two weeks. It’s whether he can make it his.

The organization should want to know, and Saturday in Winnipeg is where it starts.

The way to find out is to actually play him. Not a nine-minute fourth-line shift with Carrier and Robinson. Put him where Hall was, on the wing with Stankoven and Blake, and leave him there through the western swing. That line is built for a young winger. Two guys who forecheck, two guys who win pucks back, and nobody who needs him to drive the play. All he has to do is get to the net and shoot, which is the one thing nobody has ever questioned about him.

Give him the second power play unit, too. Carolina has run the same five guys on the top unit for years, and the second unit is where the staff has always buried whatever they weren’t sure about. A kid with a shot like Nadeau’s is exactly what that unit lacks.

The argument against this is that it’s October, the team is on a six-game winning streak, and you don’t mess with what’s working. Fine. But the lineup is already changed. Three regulars are out. The only question is whether the new guy gets a real look or a courtesy one, and a courtesy look teaches nobody anything.

This is the part of the Carolina model people miss when they talk about the cheap blue line and the no-$10-million-forwards thing. The money works because the pipeline works. Tulsky drafts guys, Chicago develops them, and when a spot opens, the kid is ready. Nadeau is the test of that this month. If he’s ready, the team is better than it was and cheaper next year than it would have been. If he’s not, that’s useful to know in October instead of March.

Either way, you don’t learn it from the press box. Play him.
