Brandon Bussi Is the Most Hurricanes Story of the Entire Cup Run

Six years ago, Brandon Bussi was working at Chipotle.

Not as a bit. Not for a commercial. He was a college kid at Western Michigan picking up weekend shifts in the summer of 2020, folding burritos for extra money during a pandemic. In his own words, he was a student who needed the cash.

This month, Chipotle made it official and signed him to a sponsorship. Bussi captioned the announcement with two words: "Full circle."

It's a great story on its own. But if you're a Caniac, it's more than that. Brandon Bussi is the most Hurricanes story of the entire championship run, and it has nothing to do with fast food.

Here's the thing about Bussi. Nobody wanted him.

He went undrafted. He played five games in the AHL and bounced around the Boston system for years without a single NHL call-up. He signed with Florida as a free agent, couldn't crack their roster, and got waived. That's the resume of a guy the league had quietly decided wasn't going to make it.

Then Carolina claimed him off waivers in October. And that's where this becomes a Hurricanes story.

Because this is what the Hurricanes do. They look at a player 30 other teams have written off, they see something in the numbers or the compete or the fit, and they take the swing nobody else will. Carolina doesn't buy the shiny thing off the top shelf. It finds the value everyone else walked past.

Bussi was the purest version of that. A 27-year-old career minor leaguer, claimed off the scrap heap, making his NHL debut against San Jose eight months before he'd lift the Stanley Cup.

And then he was unstoppable. He set records for how fast he reached his first wins, reportedly the quickest in NHL history to hit those marks. He earned a three-year extension by February. And when it mattered most, when the Cup was on the line, he came in during Game 3, got his first career playoff start in Game 4, and won the last three games of the Final to close it out.

A guy who was flipping burritos in 2020 won the Stanley Cup in 2026. For Carolina. As the last line of defense.

That is not a fluke. That is the entire philosophy of this franchise wearing goalie pads.

The Chipotle deal is the fun ending everyone will share, and they should. It's charming. It's earned. Bussi even said on a podcast weeks earlier that he'd love a Chipotle sponsorship, and then it actually happened, which makes it better.

But the reason his story hits so hard for Hurricanes fans isn't the sponsorship. It's that Brandon Bussi is proof of the thing we already knew about this team. Carolina wins by believing in players the rest of the league gave up on. They built a champion out of guys with something to prove, and the guy in net for the final horn had been waived months earlier.

Every other team saw a former Chipotle employee.

Carolina saw a Stanley Cup goalie.
