So Brady Tkachuk has back-to-back hat tricks. Three in eight minutes against Columbus on Tuesday, all set up by his brother. Then Thursday against Vancouver, nothing for 51 minutes, and then three in a row including the tying goal with 12 seconds left and the winner in overtime. Six goals in two games. Nobody's done that since Matthews in 2024.

He had one assist in his first six games as a Panther. Now he leads Florida in goals. The slow start people were already writing about is over.

And I'm sitting here thinking about June.

When Tkachuk told Ottawa he wanted out, he gave them a list of four teams. Florida, where Matthew plays. Vegas and Minnesota, where his Olympic buddies are. And Carolina. The team that had just swept him out of the playoffs. He went on his podcast and said we were the toughest team he faced all year, and then put us on the short list of places he'd be willing to go.

That's a pretty good compliment, if you think about it. Guys around the league look at this organization and want in, even the ones we just beat. Especially the ones we just beat.

Tulsky took the call and didn't do it. I'm fine with that.

Tkachuk makes $8.2 million. He scores 20-something goals, hits everyone, and gets in somebody's face about once a period. Great player. Also the exact kind of player this team has decided not to pay for. Florida sent Ottawa a bunch of picks for him and put him on the top power play next to his brother. That's how Florida does it. Stack the names. Carolina does it the other way, and we've got the banner to show for it.

Here's the part that makes me less nervous than I probably should be. Last season he played us seven times and finished with two points. Two. He gets his against everybody else and the Canes turn him into a fourth-liner. Opening night in Raleigh went to overtime at 1-0\. Slavin has been handling him for years and nothing about a new jersey changes that.

Doesn't mean he's not a problem. He is. With Barkov and Marchand both out a month, the Tkachuk brothers are basically Florida's whole offense right now, and this week that was enough. And the Panthers were already the team that's the biggest threat between us and a repeat. Now they've got the one guy in the league who probably wants to beat us the most, and he's hot.

Honestly, good. That's the matchup. If we're going to win another one, I'd rather it go through Florida and both Tkachuks than through some team nobody cares about. Makes it mean more.

And if we get to that handshake line again in May, Brady's going to be looking at the roster he asked to join and the GM who was smart enough to say no.

Winnipeg tomorrow. Go Canes.
