Every team in the league gets the same seven rounds. Same pool of kids, same scouts sitting in the same rinks in Sweden and Saskatchewan watching the same games. Carolina's two best homegrown players came off the board at 35 and 120. That's the whole story
Every Canes fan has a version of 2009 they've made peace with. Mine took about fifteen years. That team had no business being where it was. They beat New Jersey in seven, on the road, on a goal with 32 seconds left in Game 7. Then they beat
Raleigh is not a hockey town in the way Thunder Bay is a hockey town. There's no youth pipeline going back generations here, no ponds, no dad who played junior. The Hurricanes showed up in 1997 and everything about hockey in this city started from zero. So the
Every franchise has a couple of these. A backup who got hot. A guy who stood on his head for two weeks in April. Carolina has four, and two of them are the strangest goaltending stories in the entire sport. I don't think that's a coincidence
The Athletic ran a fan survey asking who wins the Cup in 2027. Nineteen thousand people answered. Colorado got 26 percent. Florida got 21. Carolina, the defending champion, got 12. And the tweet promoting it opened by calling the Avalanche by far the most dominant team in the NHL last
Ten years ago in Buffalo, Ron Francis walked to the podium with the 13th pick and took a defenseman named Jake Bean. Carolina had drafted Haydn Fleury seventh overall in 2014. Noah Hanifin fifth overall in 2015. Both left-handed defensemen. Everybody assumed 2016 was the year they finally took
NHL Network put out their top 20 wings in hockey on Sunday. It's the first of a nine-part series, so there's more coming, and I'm sure the centers and defensemen lists will have Canes on them. But there are no Hurricanes on this
It's August 3rd. Evander Kane doesn't have a job. He's 35, he's a UFA off a four-year, twenty-and-a-half million dollar deal, and the talk now is a PTO. A tryout. Show up to camp on a handshake and
If you haven't been following it, the Red Wings are having one of the worst offseasons a franchise can have. Dylan Larkin, their captain, requested a trade on June 4. He gave Yzerman a list of three teams he'd accept, Minnesota, Vegas and Florida, and he
Alexander Nikishin is reportedly asking for eight million a year. He's played one NHL season. The number would make him the third-highest-paid guy on a Stanley Cup team, ahead of Slavin, ahead of Jarvis, behind only Aho and Ehlers. If that feels familiar, it should. This
On October 5, the Florida Panthers put a 27-year-old goalie on waivers. Every team in the league could have had him for nothing. Thirty of them passed. Carolina claimed him. Eight months later he shut out Vegas in Game 6 to win the Stanley Cup. The stat Bussi
The Cup's won. Twenty years of waiting, over. Great! Besides another cup, what else am I excited about this core accomplishing? I've been kicking this around since June and I think I landed on it: I want to watch Sebastian Aho climb the franchise scoring list
