Aho, Turbo, and a Cup Reunion in Finland

Some photos just hit different if you're a Caniac.

This week, Sebastian Aho brought the Stanley Cup home to Oulu, Finland, and NHL.com captured the whole scene. Flames shooting out of the stage. A festival crowd roaring. Aho hoisting the trophy in a jacket that read "Lord Stanley" on the back, then eating out of the Cup like a man who earned every bite. Rock star treatment for the guy who deserves it.

But the picture that got me wasn't the fire or the crowd. It was a quieter one. Aho, standing next to an old friend, both of them lifting the Cup together. That friend was Teuvo Teravainen. Turbo.

If you've been a Hurricanes fan for a while, that name means something.

Aho and Turbo were teammates in Carolina from 2016 to 2024. Eight years. They grew up together in this organization, two Finns who helped drag the Hurricanes out of the wilderness and into a perennial contender. Turbo was there for the lean years and the good ones. He was one of ours for a long time.

Then, before the 2024-25 season, he left as a free agent and went back to Chicago, where his career started and where he won a Cup back in 2015. It wasn't a trade. It wasn't a falling out. It was just hockey. Contracts end, guys go home, and sometimes the player who felt permanent quietly moves on.

And that's what makes this photo so good.

Because there's a version of this story where you're bitter about it. Where a guy leaves and you root against him. But that's not what this is. This is two old teammates, two countrymen, standing in a field in Finland with the most famous trophy in sports between them, both grinning like the years never passed.

Turbo didn't win it with us. But he was part of building the thing that eventually did win it. And Aho, the guy who stayed, who signed the team friendly deal, who became the heartbeat of this franchise, got to share this exact moment with the friend who left.

That's the part I love. Carolina won the Cup by being the kind of place players want to come back and celebrate with, even the ones who moved on. Aho brought Lord Stanley to Finland, and the first familiar face he found wanted to lift it with him.

You can move on from a team and still be part of its story. Turbo is part of ours. Always will be.
